Memorial Ride For
Jerome Allen
Sunday, May 22, 2005
- What:
The Staten Island Bicycling Association has lost a dear friend and fellow cyclist
in a tragic automobile accident. To pay tribute to Jerry, and to raise road safety
awareness, we have chosen to change this year's Tour de Staten Island. Instead of
our usual Tour we plan to meet and ride as a group to the site of Jerry's accident.
We ride to remind ourselves and our community that we all share the road - cyclists,
motorists and pedestrians - and that aggressive, impatient drivers are a danger
to us all.
- Where & When:
The ride will begin and end in front of the Staten Island Borough Hall on the corner
of Bay Street and Richmond Terrace, just across from the SI Ferry terminal. The
ride will start at 9:00 AM . Riders coming from Manhattan must take the either
the 7:30 AM or 8:30 AM ferry from Whitehall Terminal to make it on time.
- Route:
We plan to ride together from the ferry to the site of Jerry's accident - Hylan
Boulevard near Poillon Avenue. We expect to reach the accident site sometime around
11:00 AM. The approximate route is: Bay Street South to Hannah Street. Front Street
and Edgewater Street to Hylan Boulevard. Bay Street south past Fort Wadsworth. Father
Capodanno to Miller Field. Mill Road to Guyon and then Hylan Boulevard south to
near Poillon. Feel free to join the ride at any point along the route.
