  • IMBA to visit Staten Island October, 2003
The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) is coming to Staten Island from Thursday October 16 through Sunday October 19 for a trail building conference. This is a big deal to have the trail care crew come to the Island and help with getting a sustainable trail for mountain bikers on the Island. This benefits all of us, whether you ride in the woods or not.

On Thursday, October 16, IMBA will present an overview of their work up at High Rock in the Greenbelt from 8-10pm. This is an hour long presentation followed by an hour of Q&A and socializing. High Rock is located at 200 Nevada Avenue off Rockland Ave. Bring a flashlight because it is dark up there at night.

On Friday, October 17, there will be a land managers presentation, again up at High Rock, a review of IMBA and their work will be presented along with a day of evaluating trails and potential problems with trails. This day is geared more towards the land managers but all are welcome to come and show their support.

On Saturday, October 18 from 8:30-12:30 a trail building class will take place at High Rock. Lunch will be served from 12:30-1:30 followed by hands on work on the trails in the Greenbelt from 1:30-5pm.

Sunday, October 19 SIBA will host a ride - site to be determined.

  • From the League of American Bicyclist's Website:

BIG APPLE MOUNTAIN BIKING: HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN
A newly formed group, New York City Mountain Biking, is working to organize New York City mountain bikers to urge the City's Parks Commissioner and elected officials to open mountain biking trails throughout thousands of acres of parks in the five boroughs. Mountain biking is currently prohibited in all New York City parks. hopes to organize volunteers to help build trails in the five boroughs under the guidance of International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA at http://www.imba.com). IMBA has agreed to allow the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew to help with design and construction of a trail system. The proposed trail would be approximately 16 miles long, consisting mainly of single track. For information and to support the effort, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NYCMB/.

  • SIBA has been in the press this year. Our annual event, the Pumpkin Patch Pedal century ride has the distinction of being the "BEST RIDE IN NJ" as voted by BICYCLING Magazine (October 2002 issue, page 93). We also garnered a choice mention (and great publicity) in RIDE magazine, which specializes in East Coast cycling events. These awards and press is probably an important factor in the great attendance we had at this year's event.
